Introduction and Working Thesis for Essay #1

Sports, politics, music, or animals, whatever one’s interest may be, there is assuredly a magazine that suits that it. Unlike Newspapers and other broad media sources, magazines tend to be highly specialized towards one or two topics. With such specialization amongst magazines, it can be assumed that two different magazines attract two different sets of readers. As a result of these distinct differences amongst the readers of separate magazines, companies will change their advertisements to fit the personality and values of that magazine’s readership. Such is the case with T-Mobile and Sony Ericsson and their advertisements in Rolling Stone Magazine and FHM Magazine. The two companies, which are both selling cell-phones, marketed their product directly towards different sets of readers. T-Mobile employed rock and roll icon, Eric Clapton, to sell their special edition Fender myTouch phone because Rolling Stone’s readers value nostalgia and culture. While Sony Ericsson employed a model in modern lingerie to market their C905 Cybershot Camera Phone because FHM’s readers value modernity and less worldly matters.
